Uma viagem à Amazónia

O Brasil é um continuum de espaço e tempo ainda a ser revelado quando o tema é a Amazónia. Através do olhar vocacionado do cinéma du réel, o reconhecido produtor cinematográfico e documentarista brasileiro, João Moreira Salles – realizador de, entre outros, o corajoso Notícias de uma guerra particular (1999) e os biográficos Santiago (2007) e  No intenso agora (2017) –, escreveu Arrabalde: em busca da Amazônia (anteriormente referido neste blogue). São fotogramas de viagem a lugares do mais extenso cenário de biodiversidade do planeta. Salles compõe um abrangente registo de evidências e emoções sob a perspectiva ambiental, científica e socioeconómica, que multiplicam o conhecimento dos estudos sobre o bioma da Amazónia brasileira. Como numa novela, parte do texto foi periodicamente antecipada, a partir de novembro de 2021, em seis artigos densos para a revista de cultura Piauí, da qual Salles é editor. A versão impressa generosamente incorporou, pelo menos, um terço a mais de relatos.

Come to Lisbon and see The Urban – the Lisbon Urban Studies Early Career Workshop

On November 8-10, 2023, ICS-ULisboa will host the 3rd edition of the Lisbon Early-Career Workshop in Urban Studies, which follows the editions of 2021 and 2022 – Luisa Rossini wrote a post on the 2022 edition. The Workshop is organised by the Urban Transitions Hub (UTH, an ICS-based horizontal and informal group of some fifteen-twenty scholars affiliated to various academic institutions).

As the UTH chair(although I shouldn’t be saying this myself) I can say that the first two editions of the workshop (one online and one in presence) have been very successful success, and the third edition promises to be even better.

A Educação Ambiental na Comunidade de Países de Língua Portuguesa: Colaboração Multilateral, entre Política e Sociedade Civil

Desde a Conferência de Estocolmo das Nações Unidas (ONU), em 1972, reconhece-se a urgência de medidas políticas e diplomáticas ambientais eficazes e transparentes, que capacitem os cidadãos a agir em prol do bem comum. Neste desiderato, surgiram marcos como a Agenda 21, na Cimeira do Rio (1992), e a Agenda 2030, na COP 21 em Paris (2015), que articulam níveis de governança (nacionais, regionais e locais) e participação pública.

No entanto, análises retrospetivas deste meio século revelam um fraco desempenho internacional na concretização destas medidas e concretamente no que diz respeito à Educação Ambiental e para o Desenvolvimento Sustentável (EA). Tal desenlace deve-se, por um lado, à sua falta de integração sistémica, resultando em medidas desarticuladas que reforçam entraves institucionais, técnicos e financeiros, e, por outro lado, à prevalência de curricula que visam inculcar conhecimentos e atitudes, mas carecem de abordagens propiciadoras de sentido crítico, significativas e interventivas no ambiente natural e sociocultural, ao longo da vida.

Esta reflexão centra-se na cooperação lusófona no campo da EA, a partir de um estudo desenvolvido no âmbito do Observatório de Ambiente, Território e Sociedade (OBSERVA/ICS-ULisboa).

Participação na cadeia de valor do café: Uma investigação antropológica para apontar as assimetrias de poder

Já parou para pensar de onde vem esse café que você tomou hoje de manhã? Pois, então, pode ter sido cultivado no Brasil. De fato, mais de um terço do café exportado no mundo é produzido no Brasil. E, se o seu café é brasileiro, é bem provável que venha do Estado de Minas Gerais, que forneceu 22 milhões de sacas em 2022, ou seja, mais de 40% da produção do café brasileiro. Mais especificamente, o sul de Minas Gerais é apropriado para cafeicultura devido às suas cadeias de montanhas, temperaturas médias de 20 graus por ano e à sua latitude. Aliás, a região assumiu a liderança na produção nacional há cerca de 50 anos.

Corrida ao Espaço, Extrativismo e Crise Climática: entre invisibilidades, ficção científica e a realidade

A velocidade com que a indústria espacial se tem desenvolvido nas últimas décadas é impressionante. Enquanto as atenções têm sido direcionadas para múltiplas crises internacionais graves nos últimos anos, desde a crise das dívidas soberanas até à pandemia de COVID-19 e ao atual conflito armado entre a Rússia e a Ucrânia, o setor espacial continua a avançar a passos largos. Impulsionado por saltos tecnológicos surpreendentes, esse avanço ocorre de forma quase silenciosa e imperceptível, exceto pelo som ocasional dos motores dos foguetões, que podemos testemunhar através dos ecrãs vibrando com a euforia das equipas que festejam mais um lançamento em direção à Lua ou a Marte.

Exploring Human-Animal Relationships in Organizational Settings: A New Research Line at the HAS-Hub

In February, the first post of a series of three was published, detailing the first steps of the Human-Animal Studies Hub (HAS-Hub). The post presents the first seeds of the Hub and the ingredients that helped it grow and gain some breath. With the mission of establishing and supporting a network of scholars from different disciplinary backgrounds and institutions interested in Human-Animal Studies who speak (not only but also) Portuguese, the HAS-Hub has been an important reference for researchers in the field. The Hub has been playing a crucial role in helping us to build a community, fostering collaboration and enabling us to work together to achieve common goals.

The series of posts reveal that the Hub is expanding, with the seeds already planted and the growth environment under close attention. Now, it is time to focus on nurturing the growth process so that the branches can become strong and fruitful. This post is dedicated to one of these branches – the research line “Animals and Organizations”. This is one of the two new research lines stemming from the synergies created in the course of post-doctoral projects developed at the Hub, the other one focusing on “Animals and Education”. Both will add to the already existing research strands that animate the HAS-Hub since 2018 – “Companion Animals” (Animals and Children, Animals and Personal Life), “Animals in Disasters”, and “Animals and Sustainability” (farmed animals, food animals, transition to plant-based diets).

Governmental bodies and the governance of digital transformation: A matter of practices

Digital transformation has become increasingly important in the public sector due to its potential to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance (digital) public services. So far, different strands of literature investigated how the use of digital technologies in public administration has enabled governments to streamline processes, automate routine tasks, and improve data management. This is supposed to lead to faster and more accurate decision-making, greater transparency, and even more citizen engagement. The COVID-19 pandemic has further highlighted the importance of digital transformation in the public sector, as remote work and digital service delivery became essential.

Climate change as a topic for an interactive exhibition

Museums and science centers have joined in the public discussion of environmental challenges. As an important nexus of scientific communication, these institutions show that stopping negative trends in the natural environment is not a task for scientists and politicians only. Regardless of professional background and interests, individuals can engage in a social debate on climate protection, treating the Earth first and foremost as a living space. This is the main theme of a new interactive exhibition titled “Mission: Earth”, which has opened a few months ago at one of Europe’s largest science centers, the Copernicus Science Center in Warsaw (Poland). It is the second of three modules that are part of the project called “The Future is Today” which is focused on humanity’s current challenges. The other parts are titled: “The Digital Brain,” and “Human 2.0” (the last one is yet to open).

A ideologia neoliberal e o urbano: o surgimento dos bairros privados no Brasil

“Nasce a Orla que Porto Alegre Merece” – é o slogan que anuncia o mais recente empreendimento imobiliário de Porto Alegre, cidade no Sul do Brasil. O empreendimento em questão leva o nome de Golden Lake e, segundo seus realizadores, é o primeiro bairro privado da cidade. Mas o que é um bairro privado?

Os bairros privados começam a despontar como forma de empreendimento imobiliário no Brasil. Até o momento, há poucos exemplos, nenhum plenamente consolidado, e todos parecem ter surgido após 2018, se tratando então de um fenômeno bastante recente. Na prática, os bairros privados nada mais são do que um tipo de condomínio fechado, mas com uma ênfase diferente. Tradicionalmente, os condomínios fechados no Brasil se localizam em regiões relativamente afastadas dos centros urbanos consolidados e sua principal característica são os altos muros e controle rigoroso de entrada e saída de pessoas. De fato, os condomínios fechados (CF) se popularizam no Brasil a partir da década de 1980, fortemente ancorados no discurso da “segurança de morar”, contra um então emergente imaginário de medo urbano.

This is the last post of a series of three in which I proposed myself to reflect upon the main opportunities and challenges implied in the establishment of the field of Human-Animal Studies (HAS) in Portugal, and the role of the HAS-Hub in that process. In the first part, I recollected the strengths of international networks and funding. In the second part, I dived into the powers of connecting in our own mother tongue. Finally, in this third and last post, I will shortly discuss the major threats that, from my point of view, the HAS-Hub may face in the near future, as well as the emerging opportunities.
